Preparing Appliances for Self-Storage

If you are moving or find yourself with an extra appliance, self storage is often the perfect solution for keeping appliances long term.  Whether it is an additional refrigerator or freezer, or a washer/dryer set, there are special precautions you should take before you put them in self storage.  If you are careful, your appliances will survive in storage for a long time and will be ready to use when you need them.

The first thing you need to do is drain any water from hoses or any other reservoir in the appliance.  You should be especially sure of this with a clothes washer, because water can linger in many different hidden places.  Defrost the refrigerator or freezer and make sure no moisture is present before you shut and seal the door for storage.  This will prevent mold and mildew, and it will assure that your appliance will not create a smell over time.  You can also use a moisture remover like DampRid just to make sure no extra moisture is present.

Clean out everything thoroughly and make sure there is nothing that can create odors over time.  You can put in an open container of baking soda just to make sure you aren’t hit with any stale odors later on.  Making sure your appliance is clean will also prevent any curious pests from lurking around like mice or bugs.

Before you move your appliance, make sure the doors are taped shut and it is covered with moving blankets.  This will prevent scratches and dents while you are moving in and out of doorways, and it will also prevent damage when the appliance bumps other items during transport.  When you load them onto a truck, put the large appliances on last so they are the first items to go into the storage unit. This way you will make sure you have plenty of room for your largest items.
