Storing Furniture

Putting furniture into self storage can be quite a challenge, especially if the items are large and bulky, or fragile.  Here are a few tips on storing furniture to help protect it from harm and to get the most out of your limited space.

Disassemble furniture when you can

In order to save space, you should take furniture apart when possible.  This is especially true for tables, beds, or anything else that can come apart.  Be sure to wrap any individual pieces so they don’t get dented or scratched.  Plus, be sure to keep up with any hardware like bolts, nuts, and screws by putting them in labeled containers. If the hardware is small enough, you can put the various items in plastic bags and tape them to the underside of the furniture.

Stack when possible to save space

You can usually stack items like chairs that are similar in size and shape.  Just be sure to protect any areas where they are contacting each other with padding.  When you are stacking one piece of furniture on top of another, be sure to put padding between them.  Make sure heavier items are always on the bottom to avoid anything falling over.

Cover upholstered furniture

If you are storing any furniture that is upholstered or cushioned, such as a sofa, mattress, or any type of pillows, you should cover them in order to keep out dust or other elements.  Do not seal the furniture tightly in plastic, because you could have problems with condensation.

Wrap glass in bubble wrap

You should always put any type of glass items in bubble wrap when possible, especially mirrors, picture frames, and other decorative glass items.  And, you should always store them vertically and not horizontally.
