An Organized Approach to Self Storage

Do you fear that your self storage unit could look like an episode off of TLC’s “Hoarding: Buried Alive?” If so, this article is written for you.

First things first. Remember that you rented this space as a solution to a problem, so it’s important that you don’t transfer it into another problem. Seriously, we all have enough of those as it is.

Organizing your self storage unit is all about the 3 C’s. (No, sorry, we aren’t talking diamonds here.) Clean out, clear containers, and compile!

Clean out your self storage unit by emptying everything to a space right outside the unit. This is the only way you will know what you have and where it should go within the unit. As you clean out, it’s a good idea to make piles to group items with similar characteristics. You could make piles for seasonal items, past treasures, and present household items. If you have a lot of belongings that belong in one category, you could break them down into more detailed groups.

Clear containers are important so that you can keep everything organized. Labeling the containers are also a great idea so that there is no question as to what belongs where. Now when you return to your storage unit for Christmas decorations, you’ll know exactly where to find them. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve destroyed cardboard boxes looking for that one particular item I needed ASAP.

Compile and situate your newly organized boxes with purpose. The most obvious step is to place larger, heavier containers on the bottom and in the back of the storage unit. Make sure the labels are facing forward for easy finding.
