How to Store Certain Items in Self Storage

Some items are no-brainers when it comes to self storage.  You pack things in boxes, label them, and you’re done.  Well, not so fast, because there are few items that may not be so obvious.  There are a lot of awkward and usual things that may not be as cut and dried as stuffing into a box.

Yard Tools

If you’re storing your yard tools and implements over the winter, then you know how bulky and awkward they can be. A good way to store items with long handles like shovels and rakes is to stand them up in a large plastic trash can.  This keeps them from falling over or taking up space along a wall, giving you more free space in the self storage unit.

Mattresses are one of the most bulky and awkward things to store in a self storage unit.  They take up a lot of room and are one of the first things to get damaged or dirty. The ideal way to store a mattress and box spring is to lay them out level and flat.  This is not always possible, but it is the best way to keep them in proper form. You should also cover them to protect them from dirt and grime, and climate control is always a must when storing mattresses.

Pots and Pans

This may not have occurred to you before, but you can utilize the empty space in an oven or refrigerator to store small kitchen items like pots and pans.  It helps you save space in boxes and it frees up room in your self storage unit.
