De-cluttering Your Self Storage Unit

We’ve talked about making preparations for storing items, but we haven’t talked about how to deal with a self storage unit that’s already out of control.  Well, there are a few things you can do to reorganize without making it a huge ordeal.

Take everything out

This sounds like a lot of work, but it will make it easier in the long run.  You will not be able to de-clutter if you are trying to work in a space that is already cluttered.  It is better to just start over. As you take your items out of your self storage unit, make three different piles: YES, NO, and MAYBE.  Put everything you want to keep in the YES pile, everything you need to get rid of in the NO pile, and things you’re unsure about in the MAYBE pile.

Reassess the MAYBE

Chances are, the majority of your MAYBE pile will turn into NO if you give it much thought.  If there’s that much question over whether or not you will need something later, then you probably won’t.  So get rid of it.  Donate your items to charity so you can help others and get a tax break.

Consider a larger self storage unit

If you find yourself with a bigger YES pile than you anticipated, then consider getting a bigger unit while you are cleaning out.  More often than not, the reason why self storage units get cluttered in the first place is because we try to put too much into a small space.  A larger unit will make it easier to stay organized over time.

Organize as you go

When you put things back into self storage, make sure you can easily access items that you need to get on a regular basis.  Clearly label all boxes and ensure that you’ll be able to find what you need without creating a big mess the next time you are looking for something.

  1. That’s a good idea to get rid of stuff that you don’t really need to keep. I have noticed that I have a lot of stuff that I want to put in storage, and I would want it all to fit. I’ll have to consider getting rid of a bunch of it or maybe getting a bigger storage unit than I was planning on.
