Choosing the size of your storage unit

Before you settle on a storage unit, you need to figure out how many things you need to store.  It is better to get a space that’s a little too big rather than one that’s too small.  Then, you will have room to store more in the future without having to move into a bigger unit.  If you haven’t boxed your items yet, estimate how many boxes you will need – this will give you a better idea of how much space you will be filling.

Here are a few examples of the sizes of storage units available at Hollywood Self Storage and a good estimate of what they will hold.

5’ x 5’ = 25 sq. feet – This unit will store a few small furniture items or a couple of stacks of boxes.  Remember that you can stack the boxes 8 feet high.

5’ x 10’ = 50 sq. feet – This unit will store the contents of a medium-sized bedroom, such as a queen-sized bed and a small dresser, possibly giving you additional space for a stack of small boxes.

10’ x 10’ = 100 sq. feet – This unit will store the contents of two medium-sized bedrooms or a large family room. This unit will hold the equivalent of half of a single car garage.  It also has an 8 foot wide front door so it is easy to reach your belongings.

10’ x 15’ = 150 sq. feet – This unit will store the contents of three medium-sized bedrooms.  You could also use this unit to store larger items instead, such as a piano or large sofa.

10’ x 30’ = 300 sq. feet – This unit will store the contents of a five bedroom house, along with any large pieces of furniture or appliances.

There are other sizes available, but this should give you an idea of where to start.  Our Storage Rates page has helpful diagrams that will give you further direction on what each unit will hold.  Again, it’s better to go a little bigger than you need so you’ll have room to grow later on.

  1. I really like the suggestion you made, that if you haven’t already packed, take a good guess on how many boxes you are going to need which will give you an idea of the size of needed. My husband and I are going to by moving and will be getting an storage unit. This tip will definitely help, and I’m glad that there are different sizes available as well so that they can better accommodate our belongings.

  2. I didn’t know there were so many different sizes of storage units. We are moving soon and want to use one for our extra stuff. I think a 10X10 would fit all of that stuff perfectly, if it’s the size of a large family room.

  3. Your Ideas of Self storage are perfect for small and large house and after reading this post I will able to control the self-storage unit.

  4. Thanks for the great article about storage unit sizes! I love that you gave a tip on how we can choose one better. I’ll be sure to get a slightly bigger unit than we need so that we can have pathways. Also, as you’ve mentioned, I’ll do an estimate of many boxes we’ll be using for the storage. As of now, I think the 5×10 will be enough to suit our needs.
