How to Pack and Store Fragile Items

When you are packing up your fragile items for self storage, you should follow the same basic rules as you would if you were moving, because in a sense, that is exactly what you’ll be doing with your boxes – moving them.  It is important to secure and protect your fragile items and make sure they remain safe and in one piece while you are moving and storing them.

Use quality, sturdy boxes

One of the best things you can do for storing fragile items is to purchase high quality, sturdy boxes – either heavy cardboard or plastic.  It is also important for you to buy them all the same size.  This way, your stacks can be uniform and uncluttered.  Good boxes will help protect what’s inside, and you won’t have to worry about them falling apart over time with wear and tear.

Use bubble wrap and packing material

Whether you are packing dishes, glass, or a mirror, it is imperative that you wrap each individual item in bubble wrap.  It may seem like a lot of effort, but you will know that your items are as safe as possible from breaking.  It is also a good idea to use plenty of packing material, like Styrofoam peanuts or crumpled paper in the empty spaces in the boxes.  This will keep your items from being jostled around during transport.

Mark your boxes “FRAGILE”

Last, be sure your boxes are marked “FRAGILE” in big, bold letters.  That way you or anyone helping you will be mindful while carrying or moving the boxes around.  Even a small drop or bump can cause damage if you are not extra careful, so it’s a good idea to keep everything marked clearly so there’s no question about what’s inside.

Use climate controlled storage

Another way to protect your fragile items, especially electronics, is to use climate controlled self-storage.  This way, you can protect your self-storage items from extreme temperature shifts throughout the year.  To learn more about climate controlled self-storage, contact Hollywood Self Storage in Augusta, Georgia, the CSRA’s favorite self storage facility!

  1. I like that you suggest getting sturdy boxes for household storage. My brother and his wife are moving into a new home this summer and want to be able to keep their stuff at home. I will send them this information so they can make sure to store everything correctly.
